Eugene Gallardo (ユージーン・ガラルド, Yūjīn Gararudo) is one of the playable characters in Tales of Rebirth. Eugene was once a respected Gajuma (Beast Man) and a high ranking commander of his country's army until he was framed in killing Annie Barrs' father and was exiled from his home town together with his foster son, Mao.

Eugene battles enemies with his long spear and is gifted with the Force of Steel which grants him enourmous physical strength. Most of his attacks have a wide area of effect and are themed to both wind/lightning and earth elements. He can also combine his Force with other Tales of Rebirth characters and perform joint attacks called Fusionic Force Finalities which are the equivalent of Mystic Artes in his original game. Eugene is classified as a power house character with average agility.

Eugene is fairly easy to use and is recommended to beginners and veterans alike.

  • He starts the battle while striking a pose.
  • He has two victory pose.
  • Whenever he uses his Mystic Artes, Annie Barrs or Mao from Tales of Rebirth will assist him.
    • When Inferno Drive is used as a finishing move, Mao will perform his victory pose together with Eugene.
  • Eugene will chant the words used to cast the spell Indignation at the start of a battle against Dhaos.
  • Before the start of a battle, press and hold ↓ to summon Annie Barrs to your side for until the end of the battle.
    • Annie will follow Eugene around the battlefield and cast two of her support artes randomly but it will not have any effect.
    • Annie cannot be hit by any kind of attack.
    • This only works for the first player.
    • If Eugene wins the battle, Annie will perform her victory pose together with him.
  • Aside from being a playable character, Eugene also acts as a support for Hilda Rhambling from Tales of Rebirth whenever she uses her Mystic Arte.

General Tips & Usage[]

  • Eugene is all about spacing. He has the longest attack range in the game, hands down. Moves like his Melee Attack A, Aerial Attack C, and Shunjinsou can outspace every other character in the game. With moves like Goubaku Jinsoushou and Ren Koutaisou, Eugene can apply adequate offensive pressure as well. If he is under pressure, Ren Koutaisou and Messhousou can get him out. Throw in solid anti-airs in Melee Attack C and Tenraisou, and it can be very frustrating to land a hit on Eugene.
  • Eugene's biggest weaknesses include his mobility and damage output. His damage output isn't bad per se, but he can't deal an incredibly damaging combo when the stakes are getting high, unlike most of the other fighters. His mobility is fairly weak as well. Thankfully he doesn't need it most of the time, but if he's getting kept out by characters like Suzu Fujibayashi and Collet Brunel, then it can be an issue.
  • Eugene's HP, attack power and dash lenth are above average; his move speed, defense against guard break and jump height are somewhat average and his back step is below average.
  • Eugene receives 30% more damage from Wind Elemental attacks and 30% less damage from Earth Elemental attacks. (Please refer to this page for more information on ACS Elements).
  • Eugene can perform all of the basic movements in ACS except for High Jump.
    • Eugene's Double Jump almost reaches the top of the screen.
    • Eugene can chain his forward air dash with another forward air dash or a backward air dash.
  • Eugene has two basic melee attacks (A & B) and one riser attack (C).
    • Unlike other characters, Eugene cannot tap ↑ after his riser attack to perform a riser jump.
  • Eugene has two basic aerial attacks (A/B & C).
    • His C aerial attack has a wide area of effect and can disable enemies.
  • During Overlimit Lv2 status, Eugene is harder to stagger (Unmarked Penetrate Status) for until Overlimit status expires.

    • A horizontal slash which causes a small short range shockwave.
    • Not recommended for combos.
    • Has slight start-up invincibility. Not long enough to be reliable, however.
    • Wind Elemental.
    • TTS is Slow. TTL is Average.
  • Rekkusou (Impale)
    • Eugene takes a stance and performs a lunging thrust.
    • Lunge range is about 50% of the screen's length.
    • During Overlimit, Eugene will no longer take a stance and immediately perform a lunging thrust.
      • You can connect this arte after Shunsatsu Tenshougeki during Overlimit provided that the enemy is not against a wall when Shunsatsu Tenshougeki was used.
    • Moderate knockback effect.
    • TTS is Slow but Very Fast during Overlimit. TTL is Average.
  • Gouhasou (Roaring Spear)
    • Eugene thrusts his spear on the ground causing spiked rocks to appear around him.
    • Not recommended for combos.
    • Moderate knockback effect and tosses enemies in mid-air.
    • Earth Elemental
    • TTS is Slow. TTL is Average.
  • Shunjinsou (Sonic Spear)
    • A lunging combo of three downward spear slashes.
    • Lunge range is about 50% of the screen's length.
    • Allows you to shorten the distance between Eugene and the enemy.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Average.
  • Tenraisou (Thunder Lance)
    • An upward slash followed by a lightning strike.
    • Moderate knockback effect and tosses enemies in mid-air.
    • This arte can be chained to itself if the enemy is against a wall and the combo counter does not exceed 4 hits.
    • You can also chain this arte to Eugene's ground melee attack. The enemy must not be against a wall and the combo counter must not exceed 4 hits for this to work.
    • Wind Elemental.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Long.
  • Messhousou (Falling Lance)
    • A short range tackle followed by an upward and downward spear slash.
    • Not recommended for combos since it immediately disables enemies.
    • Eugene's strongest and fastest Base arte.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Non-existent.

    • Eugene gathers power, takes a stance and performs a lunging thrust.
    • Lunge range is about 50% of the screen's length.
    • Disables enemies.
    • Always inflicts Guard Break on blocking enemies.

  • Goubaku Senpuuga (Roaring Storm)
    • Eugene thrusts his spear on the ground causing a force of wind to knock back nearby enemies.

  • Reppuu Shunjinsastsu (Cyclone Gale)
    • A 3-hit spear slash combo.
    • Disables enemies.

    • A 2-hit spear slash combo with the 2nd slash summoning multiple lightning bolts.
    • Disables enemies.

  • Messatsu Senpuuga (Falling Storm)
    • A short range tackle followed by an upward and downward spear slash. The arte is finished by summoning a whirlwind in to attack the enemy.
    • Disables enemies.
    • Long delay after use.
    • Wind Elemental.
    • TTS is Average. TTL is Short.
  • Goubaku Jinsoushou (Roaring Surge)
    • Eugene thrusts his spear on the ground causing spiked rocks and two mid-ranged shock waves to knock back nearby enemies.
    • Great knockback effect and tosses enemies in mid-air.
    • The last hit is unblockable, so it's recommended to cancel into this arte if your Base arte is blocked.
    • TTS is Average. TTL is Average.
  • Shunsatsu Jinsoushou (Fatal Surge)
    • A charging 2-hit combo followed by a lunging thrust.
    • Travels 100% of the screen's length.
    • Great knockback effect.
    • Disables enemies.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Short.
  • Ressou Bakuraijin (Goring Thunder)
    • A lunging thrust followed by another thrust which summons multiple lightning bolts to attack the enemy.
    • Lunge range is about 50% of the screen's length.
    • Slight knockback effect.
    • Disables enemies.
    • Wind Elemental.
    • TTS is Average. TTL is Average.
  • Ressou Tenshougeki (Goring Descent)
    • A lunging thrust followed by a powerful upward thrust and withdrawal of the spear.
    • Lunge range is about 50% of the screen's length.
    • Difficult to aim properly.
    • Attacks after the lunging thrust are unblockable.
    • Cancelling into this arte after a blocked Base arte is also a good idea, but there's a larger gap between attacks than Goubaku Jinsoushou.
    • Tosses enemies in mid-air.
    • Earth Elemental.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Average.
  • Shunsatsu Goushougeki (Fatal Roar)
    • A charging 3-hit combo followed by a thrust to the ground which summons spiked rocks to knock back nearby enemies.
    • Travels 80% of the screen's length.
    • Moderate knockback effect and tosses enemies in mid-air.
    • Earth Elemental.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Average.
  • Jinrai Goushougeki (Thunder Roar)
    • An upward slash with lightning strikes followed by a thrust to the ground which summons purple energy to knock back nearby enemies.
    • Moderate knockback effect and tosses enemies in mid-air.
    • Wind Elemental.
    • TTS is Average. TTL is Average.
  • Goubaku Tenshougeki (Roaring Descent)
    • A double thrust to the ground summons medium and large spiked rocks to knock back nearby enemies.
    • Good power, moderate knockback effect and tosses enemies in mid-air.
    • High chance of Guard Break.
    • Requires Overlimit or below 150 HP.
    • Earth Elemental.
    • TTS is Average. TTL is Average.
  • Jinrai Shunjinsatsu (Thunder Gale)
    • A 2-hit spear slash combo followed by 5 thrusts.
    • The last thrust tosses enemies in mid-air.
    • Moderate knockback effect.
    • Light Elemental.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Average.
  • Shunsatsu Tenshougeki (Fatal Descent)
    • A diving pierce followed by a earth elemental shockwave that travels 80% of the screen length.
    • The only arte Eugene has that can be used in mid-air.
    • Moderate knockback effect.
    • You can connect Rekkusou after this arte during Overlimit if the enemy is not against a wall when this arte was used.
    • Earth Elemental.
    • TTS is Average. TTL is Average.
  • Jinrai Tenshougeki (Thunder Descent)
    • Eugene calls forth a lightning bolt, jumps back and summons a meteor to attack the enemy.
    • The meteor attack is unblockable.
    • Moderate knockback effect.
    • Disables enemies.
    • Wind Elemental.
    • TTS is Average. TTL is Non-existent.

Force Ability[]

  • Ren Koutaisou (Iron Stance)
    • Eugene endows his body with flame, making him harder to stagger.
    • Grants Eugene the Penetrate status for 5 seconds.
    • The penetrate status is canceled whenever Mystic Artes are used by the player or by the enemy.
    • TTS is Slow.
  • Ren Kyoumeidan (Mirror Stance)
    • Eugene endows his body with lightning, granting him invulnerability.
    • Grants a very short invulnerability buff which can be used to avoid certain attacks such as Big Bang.
    • Has a moderate delay after use.
    • TTS is Slow.

Support Artes[]

  • Power Kraft
    • Annie Barrs will summon a red magic circle around her.
    • In her original game, this arte should increase the attack power of all nearby allies but currently, it has no effect on ACS.
    • TTS is Slow.
  • Guard Wasser
    • Annie Barrs will summon a blue magic circle around her.
    • In her original game, this arte should increase the defense of all nearby allies but currently, it has no effect on ACS.
    • TTS is Slow.

Mystic Artes[]

  • Inferno Drive
    • Mao enchants Eugene's spear with flame. Eugene and Mao will then perform a lunging thrust which passes through the enemy and causing a big explosion.
    • Good power and has 50% TP cost.
    • Disables enemies.
    • Even if used on an enemy who is against a wall, Eugene will still shift sides with the enemy after the arte is used.
    • TTS is Very Fast. TTL is Non-existent.
  • Shouha Rekkousen (Light Blast)
    • Annie Barrs will summon a magic circle and wil continually endow Eugene's spear with light. Eugene will then perform a downward slash followed by an upward slash which will send the foe flying. Eugene will finish the combo by impaling the enemy in mid-air as his spear turns into beams of light to further pierce the enemy.
    • Eugene's strongest arte and has about 55% TP cost.
    • Requires Overlimit or Below 70 HP.
    • Disables enemies.
    • The power of this arte decreases as the combo counter hits increases.
    • You can continue the combo after this arte by using Overlimit if used on an enemy that is against a wall and is free falling in mid-air.
      • The enemy must freeze in mid-air after using this arte.
      • Timing is necessary to execute this, the frozen enemy's feet must be at the same level as that of Eugene's body.
    • This arte has two different cut-ins. Which cut-in will appear is determined at random.
    • TTS is Very Fast. TTL is Non-existent if used on an enemy on the ground and Very Short if used on an enemy in mid-air.

      • The combo must start at the opposite side of the stage (As if Eugene is cornered against a wall).
      • Full TP for using Shouha Rekkousen twice.
      • Overlimit bar is set at level 2.
      • Enemy must not be against a wall until Note 5.
    • Notes:
      • Note 1: Be sure to be really close to the enemy before attacking twice using the A button.
      • Note 2: Press A twice once the enemy lands on the ground and the dust from the enemy's landing can already be seen.
      • Note 3: Use Overlimit 1 as fast as possible. If your timing is correct you will see that the enemy is still slightly being knocked back from Eugene's Shunsatsu Tenshougeki.
      • Note 4: Use Rekkusou as fast as possible. Use the →F shortcut button and spam press it.
      • Note 5: At this part of the combo, the enemy must be against a wall.
      • Note 6: This part is a little tricky, you have to use Shouha Rekkousen just before the enemy lands on the ground. The enemy's feet must be at the same level as Eugene's body. If the enemy is too high in mid-air or if the enemy touches the ground, Overlimit Lv1 will not connect after using Shouha Rekkousen. This is the hardest part of the combo.
  • Eugene's instant kill combo, a little tricky to execute and has multiple requirements before it can be used.

Story Mode[]

Eugene has a total of 5 Story Modes, ranging from Easy to Unknown. Note that all modes including and preceding Hard feature opponents that come in "Rounds", meaning that the field, positions, and statistics (HP and otherwise) will reset once an opponent is defeated. Modes after Hard feature opponents that come one after another, meaning that the fields, positions, and statistics of your character will not reset once an opponent has been defeated. However, A portion of your HP is refunded whenever an opponent is defeated in Mania Mode.
