- This page covers facts and in-depth game usage of the character, Regal Bryan. For a comprehensive reference list of in-game commands, see Command List: Regal Bryan.
Regal Bryan (リーガル・ブライアン Riigaru Buraian) is one of the main protagonists in Tales of Symphonia. Regal is a gentleman and yet a branded convict who voluntarily surrendered to the authorities after killing his monster-transformed lover with his bare hands. He was then tasked by the Pope of Tethe'alla to capture Collet Brunel in exchange for the arrest of the person responsible for his lover's transformation but was distracted when he saw her lover's sister, Presea Combatir, together with the group. He eventually joined Lloyd Irving and company and is the oldest person to join the group (aside from Kratos Aurion).
Regal is very powerful martial artist but due to the vow he made of never using his hands to harm another living being, he exclusively uses greaves and his feet to fight. His artes mostly contain different kicks and chi attacks which he can freely use both in mid-air and on the ground. His movement speed, damage output and jumping height are considered above average as compared to other ACS characters.
Regal is not very difficult to use and is recommended to beginner's and veterans alike.
Character Facts[]
- HP 530.
- He enters the battle by dropping out of nowhere.
- He only has one victory pose.
- Regal is one of the few characters in ACS that can perform a Quick Drop.
- Regal is capable of using Overlimit in mid-air unllike most ACS characters.
- A special dialogue scene will occur when Regal is faced against Zelos Wilder.
General Tips & Usage[]
- Regal is a powerful rushdown orientated character. With moves like Yousoushuugeki to approach and Sazanka to continue in-close pressure, Regal can crush overly defensive opponents. His damage output is high as well, and he packs good defensive options in Garyoukuuha, Hatsu, and Hakurougeki. His Mystic Artes are also viable outside of combos, which is a nice bonus.
- Regal's biggest shortcoming is his range. With everyone else sporting a sword, Regal's little legs are often outranged by others in the cast. Overwhelming them with a relentless approach is the prefered option.
- Regal has excellent jumping height, above average movement speed, dash length, damage output and an average HP.
- Regal has an average defense against Guard Break.
- Regal receives 30% more damage from Fire Elemental attacks and 20% less damage from Water Elemental Attacks. (Please refer to this page for more information on ACS Elements).
- Regal can perform all the basic movements in ACS.
- Additionally, Regal can perform a Quick Drop by pressing ↓↓ while in mid-air to immediately descend to the ground.
- This costs 1 CC to execute.
- His air dashes costs 1 CC.
- His forward air dash sends him straight forward.
- His Double Jump exceeds the top of the screen and is higher than his High Jump.
- He can chain his backward air dash to a forward air dash.
- His Forward Step and Backward Leap have average length and speed.
- He has one of the better walk speeds in the game.
- Additionally, Regal can perform a Quick Drop by pressing ↓↓ while in mid-air to immediately descend to the ground.
- Regal has two melee ground attacks (A and B) and a basic riser attack (C then tap ↑). He also has two melee aerial attacks (A and C).
- His C riser attack will not work if the combo counter exceeds 3 hits.
- His C aerial attack has a great knockback effect.
- Most of Regal's aerial artes can be canceled by doing a forward air dash just before the arte has been fully executed. This move is known as Dash Cancel. This also works with Regal's Quick Drop.
- This action costs 1 CC to execute.
- Regal uses a Chain Capacity (CC) Gauge, enabling him to use many different artes in his combos as long as he has enough CC to use each arte.
- Regal starts with 11 CC.
- During Overlimit Lv1, Regal starts with 12 CC.
- During Overlimit Lv2, Regal's CC is frozen at 12 for the Overlimit's duration.
- Regal can use Overlimit in mid-air by pressing F or ↓ F during an aerial combo.
- Regal's chain order consists of:
- Melee > Any Arte Type > Any Arte Type > Any Arte Type > etc.
- Some of Regal's artes cannot be used consecutively.
- Using any arte classified as Mystic except for Satsugeki Bukouken: Donrou will end the chain.

- TTS is Slow. TTL is Long and becomes Short when the combo counter exceeds 7 hits.
- Souryuu Rengadan (Dragon's Talon)
- Gekkaryuurei (Crescent Dark Moon)
- Hatsu (Force)
- Hakurougeki (White Wolf)

- Garen Zesshuugeki (Fanged Finality)

- Range is 100% of the screen's length.
- Great knockback effect and disables enemies.
- This arte is more powerful when used in mid-air but is more accurate when used on the ground.
- Since the arte inflicts Air-tech Disable, the key to comboing into the aerial version of this arte is to launch the opponent up with an anti-air arte, then cancel into this arte right before Regal hits the ground, so the fireball will hit the enemy on the ground. A good example would be cancelling from Seiryuukou or Tengetsusen.
- TTS is Very Fast when used on the ground and Slow when used in mid-air. TTL is Non-existent.
Advanced Tips & Combos[]
Battle Strategy[]
Regal is a character that focuses more on combos and evasion but as to whether to focus on attacking or evading depends on the situation/enemy. A balance between attack and evasion is recommended.
Advanced Tips on Attacking/Intercepting Attacks[]
- Attack an enemy while their down using Regal's Advanced Power Combo but be careful of mystic artes and counter attacks.
- Regal's air dash does not allow him to perform dive attacks so his primary diving attack is actually Yousoushuugeki. You can chain Regal's Advanced Accuracy Combo afterwards without ending the combo count.
- There is no immediate need to corner an enemy against a wall when using Regal.
- Regal's Overlimit is best used offensively especially when your enemy is in mid-air. Mid-air combos prevent enemies from using their own Overlimit to escape your assault.
- Regal doesn't have any long range attacks so always stay at mid/close range from your enemy and wait for an opportunity to strike.
- Use Regal's mystic artes against enemies with Penetrate status to remove it. Regal's mystic artes have very low TP costs.
- All of his Mystic Artes except for Garen Zesshuugeki are great for interrupting projectile attempts.
- Hakurougeki is a great arte to use against mobs. Take advantage of its unblockability and invulnerability while charging.
- Use Tenpouryuu when your enemy is blocking to switch sides with them and attack at the same time. You can also use Youshishuuraku to easily inflict Guard Break on an enemy.
Advanced Tips on Blocking/Evasion[]
- Regal is better at evading attacks rather than blocking them since his defense against Guard Break is not as high as compared with other ACS characters.
- Take advantage of Regal's artes when evading ground attacks. After a double jump, you can use Tengetsusen > Ryuugetsusen repeatedly to increase his jump height further and stay afloat in mid-air.
- You can also evade some spells by staying in mid-range from the opponent and using Hiyouhonpo just as the enemy casts a spell.
- Regal's Hakurougeki has a very long invulnerability frame when while charging. You can use this to evade most mystic artes and counter attack at the same time.

- Note 2: Use Resshuugeki as soon as Regal lands on the ground. This timing will change if the enemy is against the wall.
- Note 3: Wait for your CC to recover before attacking.
- Note 4: You can use either artes depending on your TP. Also, you can chain another mystic arte or Overlimit after Satsugeki Bukouken: Donrou with proper timing.
- Requirements:
- Out of all Regal's possible combos with CC recovery, this has the most damage output.
- Timing will change when the enemy is against a wall. Use the 1st five artes as ( Tengetsusen > Tengetsusen > Resshuugeki > Tengetsusen > Resshuugeki ) instead for better accuracy.

Highest Combo[]
- Melee Attack X2 > Tengetsusen > Resshuugeki > Tengetsusen > Tengetsusen [Note 1] > Resshuugeki [Note 2] > Melee Attack X2 [Note 2] > Hiryuugaku > Yousoushuugeki > Shousei Furyuukyaku [Note 3] > Shousei Furyuukyaku [Note 4] > Melee Attack X2 > Hiryuugaku > Hienrenkyaku > Hiryuugaku > Satsugeki Bukouken: Donrou [Note 5] > Satsugeki Bukouken: Donrou > Satsugeki Bukouken: Donrou > Overlimit Lv2 > ( Hienrenkyaku > Hiryuugaku )X Repeat until CC is 5 > Hienrenkyaku > Garen Zesshuugeki
- Quick Input Version:
- A > A > ↓ A > ← → A > ↓ A > ↓ A > ← → A > A > A > ↓ → C > ↓ ← A > ↓ ← → A > ↓ ← → A > A > A > ↓ → C > ↓ → B > ↓ → C > ↓ ← → E > ↓ ← → E > ↓ ← → E > ↓ F > ( ↓ → B > ↓ → C )X Until CC is 5 > ↓ → B > ↓ → ← E
- 110 Hits. Damage instanly kills Kakashi Scarecrow.
- Requirements:
- Enemy must be at a certain area of the map near the other side of the wall.
- 100% TP.
- Enemy must be against the wall during a part of the combo.
- Overlimit Lv2.
- Notes:
- Note 1: Use Tengetsusen as soon as Regal lands on the ground.
- Note 2: Use Resshuugeki as soon as Regal lands on the ground. Press your basic melee (A) twice as soon as your CC recovers.
- Note 3: Use Shousei Furyuukyaku while Regal lands on the ground but before the enemy lands.
- Note 4: Perfect timing is necessary here, use Shousei Furyuukyaku while Regal lands on the ground but before the enemy can air-tech.
- Note 5: Perfect timing is necessary to use Satsugeki Bukouken: Donrou thrice in a row. Ignore your CC here since for some reason, you can still use Satsugeki Bukouken: Donrou even if your CC is less than 2.
- Regal's highest combo is very difficult to use and very impractical due to the fact that the enemy needs to be at a certain position in the map for this combo to work properly.
