Lloyd Irving (ロイド・アーヴィングRoido Aavingu) is the main protagonist of Tales of Symphonia, a 17 year-old boy raised by his adoptive dwarven father who started his journey as an escort for the Chosen of Regeneration, Collet Brunel, to become an angel. Lloyd winds up saving Collet from losing her humanity as part of the ritual to complete her journey, and later, goes on to combine the two worlds of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla in order to prevent any more innocent people like Collet from being sacrificed for a moot cause. In battle, Lloyd's movement and attacks are fast. He claims that he wields two swords because Refill Sage taught him when he was young that two apples are better than one.

His sprites are from Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3, which have been tweaked to enable artes that weren't included in Narikiri Dungeon 3.

  • When faced against Zelos Wilder, Zelos asks himself doubtfully if he is really prepared to fight Lloyd. Lloyd responds, calling Zelos an idiot. Zelos reservedly retorts that being called an idiot suits him, and beckons Lloyd to begin the fight. This is a reference to his betrayal of the Symphonia party, and their resulting fight, if Lloyd chose not to speak to any of his fellow party members during a crucial moment in the story.
  • When faced against Kratos Aurion, Kratos tells Lloyd that he needs to fight seriously and with all his might if he hopes to win. Lloyd responds, telling Kratos not to doubt his dedication, and Kratos acknowledges that dedication before beginning the fight. This scene is a reference to the pact with the Summon Sprit "Origin" in Symphonia, in which Lloyd was forced into a battle with Kratos in order to nullify Origin's currently existing pact.
  • When faced against Mithos Yggdrasill, Mithos questions Lloyd's ideals, to which Lloyd responds, questioning how anything that involves the senseless homicide of many people could possibly be ideal. Mithos then mockingly calls Lloyd a babbling wise man, implying that Lloyd speaks of things he does not fully know or understand from lack of experience, a reference to the fact that Mithos is over 4000 years old.
  • While in Overlimit Lv2, the voices for Majinken Souga, Shishisenkou, and Shikousenpa are replaced with his Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World voice actor.

General Tips & Usage[]

  • Lloyd has almost no real strengths or weaknesses, making him a very well-rounded character. His range is acceptable, has a lot of safe artes like Chirisazame and Rekkuuzan, and a fair damage output. He's a good character to learn the basics of ACS.
  • Lloyd has above average move speed and jump height. All of his other stats are average.
  • Lloyd's defense against Guard Break is considered average.
  • Lloyd receives 30% more damage from Wind Elemental attacks and 20% less damage from Fire Elemental Attacks. (Please refer to this page for more information on ACS Elements).
  • Lloyd can perform all the basic movements in ACS except for High Jump and Backward Leap.
    • Lloyd's Double Jump exceeds the screen's height but it has a cooldown. You can only use Double Jump again after a few seconds from using the first one.
    • Lloyd's Forward Step has a good range and speed.
    • Lloyd's running speed increases during Overlimit.
  • Lloyd's has two ground melee attacks (A & B) and a basic riser attack (C then tap ↑). Lloyd has two aerial melee attacks (A & C).
    • The delay for his C riser attack, is lengthened if the combo counter is greater than 5. He cannot use his riser jump when the combo counter exceeds 5 hits.
    • His C aerial attack has a great knockback effect and disables enemies.
  • Lloyd can taunt his enemies by pressing E. If the taunt animation is succesfully executed, Lloyd's TP and OVL Gauge will slightly increase.
  • His chain order consists of:
    • Melee > Base > Master > Arcane > Burst > Mystic
    • Some of Lloyd's artes cannot be chain to his Burst arte.
    • During Overlimit, Lloyd can chain any Master arte after Kokuu Souhazan.

    • Somersaults forward while slashing multiple times.

    • You can reset the basic combo after landing if this arte is used after connecting Lloyd's A aerial attack before the enemy can air-tech.
      • You must use Lloyd's C riser attack to lift the enemy up for this to work.

  • Raihazan (Lightning Tiger)
    • A rising slash followed by a downward slash that summons a lightning bolt.
    • If done in the air, reverts to normal Kogahazan.
    • Can only be executed in Overlimit.
    • Wind Elemental.

  • Shunraiken (Lightning Thrust)
    • A single thrust forward that summons a lightning bolt upon contact.
    • Can't be used repeatedly like Shunjinken.

      • Practical application of this concept would be to use this arte at the peak of Lloyd's C riser attack when the enemy is against a wall. For this to work, Lloyd's C aerial attack must be connected before using Kogarenzan.

    • Somersaults forward a bit then somersaults upwards while slashing multiple times.
    • Can be used in the air.

    • Has large knockback and disables enemies.

  • Makoujin (Demonic Circle)
    • Slashes forward then slams his sword into the ground creating a large shockwave.
    • Can hit players both behind and in front of Lloyd.
    • High knockback.
    • If used in Overlimit Lv2, adds a projectile to the first slash of the attack.

  • Mouko Gouhazan (Twin Tiger Blade)
    • A rising slash, downward slash, another rising slash, then another downward slash knocking down the opponent.
    • Can pickup downed players if used at correct timing.

  • Retsuzanpuu (Psi Tempest)
    • Somersaults forward reaching approximately 90% to full screen length.
    • High knockback.
    • Knockback can be reduced by using certain master artes before Retsuzanpuu.
    • Overlimit can be used after this arte to inflict Air-tech Disable. This is one way to continue Lloyd's combo after an Overlimit Burst when the enemy is not against a wall.
    • During Overlimit, this arte transforms into Kaenrekkuu.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Average.
  • Shikousenpa (Raging Beast)
    • Spins around, bringing opponents closer, then shoulders forward then spins releasing energy in the shape of a lions head.
    • Has large knockback and disables enemies.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Very Short.
  • Shikou Shouhajin (Hunting Beast)
    • Shoulders forward then spin-flips, releasing energy in the shape of a lions head, then falls down and slams his sword into the ground creating a large shockwave.
    • Shockwave portion has a high chance of Guard Break .
    • Has large knockback.

  • Hitenshouku (Rising Falcon)
    • Jumps high in the sky then plunges downward with his sword.
    • Can be used in the air, removing the initial jump.
    • Can knock opponents up if they're hit in the air.
    • Press E as Lloyd lands to connect this arte to Kuuha Zetsueigeki.
    • TTS is Average and Fast if used in mid-air. TTL is Average.

    • A slash forward releasing a close-ranged wave of flames.

  • Byakkosouha (White Tiger Blade)
    • A rising slash, a downward slash, then a spin releasing energy in the shape of a lions head.
    • Has large knockback and disables enemies.

    • Jumps high in the sky with the Eternal Sword, then a downward slash with the sword encased in large energy.
    • Can only be executed in Overlimit.

  • Kuukan Shouten'i (Lunge) or (Eternal Slasher)
    • Actively named "Lunge", though Lloyd originally had an unused voice file for "Eternal Slasher".
    • Lloyd rises with the Eternal Sword, then appears above the opponent. He then performs a downward slash, forward slash, a thrust, then a rising slash.
    • Burst artes cannot be connected after this arte.
    • Near the end of the recovery, Lloyd can cancel this arte into a backdash.

    • Has large knockback.
    • Can only be executed in Overlimit.

    • A combination attack of Eruption, from an unseen user, and Shikou Shouhajin.
    • Shoulders forward then spin-flips, releasing fiery energy in the shape of a lions head, then falls down and slams his sword into the ground creating a large explosion.
    • Has large knockback.
    • Can only be executed in Overlimit.
    • Fire Elemental.
    • TTS is Fast. TTL is Average.
  • Kuuha Zetsueigeki (Severed Darkness)
    • Lloyd thrusts across the field, blasting opponents away.
    • Can only be activated after Hitenshouku or Hououtenku.

  • Seiou Soukizan (Imperial Destruction)
    • A rising slash followed by two aerial slash then a downward slash releasing energy in the shape of a lions head.
    • Knocks back for about 90% of the screen's length.
    • Disables enemies.
    • Does not work after Base Artes or Mystic Artes, except any of the following:
      • Raihazan
      • Shunraiken
    • Requires Overlimit to use.
    • Overlimit cannot be immediately used after this arte.
    • TTS is Instant. TTL is Average.

Mystic Artes[]

  • Meikuu Zanshouken (Dark Blade)
    • Lloyd slashes twice then rises with his sword encased in energy.
    • TP consumption is very low for a Mystic arte.
    • TTS is Very Fast. TTL is Non-existent.
  • Tenshou Souhazan (Falcon's Crest)
    • Lloyd unleashes the power of the Eternal Sword.
    • When the cut-in is about to appear, hold ↓ to get the Tales of VS cut-in, instead of the default Symphonia version.
    • The last hit knocks enemies back and disables them.
    • TTS is Very Fast. TTL is Non-existent.
  • Shouha Soutenzan (Divine Justice)
    • Jumps high in the sky, then slams both swords into the ground severing the earth beneath him.
    • When the cut-in is about to appear, hold ↓ to get the Tales of VS cut-in, instead of the default Symphonia version.
    • Lloyd's strongest arte.
    • Requires Overlimit.
    • The last hit knocks enemies back and disables them.
    • TTS is Very Fast. TTL is Non-existent.

Advanced Tips & Combos[]

Battle Strategy[]

  • Lloyd is an inherently flawed character. The majority of his attacks are close range, weak, multiple hit attacks that can easily be punished, and most (if not all) of his strong moves have significant lag after execution. So even though Lloyd can rack up large combos, it's all meaningless if he can't efficiently deal more damage than he'll take in return.
  • The solution to this is simple: Mystic Artes. Meikuu Zanshouken and Tenshou Souhazan both do significant amounts of damage, don't cost much TP, and can easily be comboed into from almost all of Lloyd's artes. Of course, they can just as easily be blocked, but when combined with Lloyd's Burst Arte and a wall, Lloyd can guarantee a hit with either of his two main Mystic Artes, and possible even Shouha Soutenzan if he has enough TP.
  • Lloyd should always be struggling for more TP and OVL gauge, as he'll constantly be sacrificing them to do as much damage with his combos as possible. To put it another way, he's a TP/OVL bomb; once he has enough of either, he'll use them immediately to destroy the opponent.
  • When fighting against Lloyd, the Guard command is your best friend. Withstand Lloyd's initial barrage, and he's completely open to counter attacks. Spellcasters beware, though; Lloyd can easily smash through Spell Guards.

    • Note 1: Attack just as the enemy starts to fall but before the enemy can air-tech. Don't worry as the timing here is not very difficult.
    • Note 2: This is the only tricky part, you have to use Rekkuuzan as soon as Lloyd's aerial melee attack lands on the enemy. If used correctly, 4 hits of Rekkuuzan should connect. Sometimes Lloyd will switch sides with the enemy depending on your timing. This will not affect the combo though.
  • An example of how this combo can be incorperated into longer combos can be seen below (Advanced Power Combo).

An example of this extension in a combo.

  • Total hits = 9. Does 40 damage alone. 
  • Can be done anywhere on the screen. If done near the corner, does 56 damage and adds an extra hit.
  • This combo is useful as it allows Lloyd to enter Over Limit and continue his combo from anywhere on the screen. How it works is that Fuujinken lifts the opponent up very slighty, enough for Retsuzanpuu to not hit fully. Normally Retsuzanpuu causes a wall-slam, but if the last hit doesn't connect, then the enemy will fall freely. Activating Overlimit will then inflict Air-Tech Disable , allowing Lloyd to continue his combo.'

Notes 

  • Cancel into Retsuzanpuu as soon as possible to avoid the aforementioned wall-slam. If done a little later, it is still possible to continue the combo if Lloyd is close enough to the corner.

      • Note 2: Use Rekkuuzan as soon as Lloyd's aerial melee attack lands on the enemy. If used correctly, 4 hits of Rekkuuzan should connect.
      • Note 3: Attack as soon as Lloyd is able to. If the previous actions were executed properly, the combo counter will not reset at this part of the combo.
      • Note 4: You need to have perfect timing in pressing Hitenshouku to inflict Air-tech Disable and at the same time allow Lloyd to repeat the combo. Watch the video for the timing.
      • Note 5: Use Seiou Soukizan in mid-air as soon as Lloyd is able to.

      • Full TP.
      • Enemy is against a wall.
      • Overlimit Gauge set at Lv2.
    • Notes:
      • Note 1: Attack just as the enemy starts to fall but before the enemy can air-tech. Don't worry as the timing here is not very difficult.
      • Note 2: Press C just as the enemy reaches the peak height of being tossed. Use Rekkuuzan and Kogarenzan as swift as possible.
      • Note 3: Attack as soon as Lloyd is able to. If the previous actions were executed properly, you will be able to connect your melee attacks while the enemy is down on the ground.
      • Note 4: Use Shishisenkou before the enemy lands on the ground to connect Majin Souhazan.
      • Note 5: At this part of the combo, you must slow down or maximize your TTL so that the Overlimit Bar will be depleted just as you use Mouko Gouhazan.

Story Mode[]

Lloyd has a total of 6 Story Modes, ranging from Easy to Chaos. Note that all modes including and preceding Hard feature opponents that come in "Rounds", meaning that the field, positions, and statistics (HP and otherwise) will reset once an opponent is defeated. Modes after Hard feature opponents that come one after another, meaning that the fields, positions, and statistics of your character will not reset once an opponent has been defeated. However, A portion of your HP is refunded whenever an opponent is defeated in Mania Mode.
